prep for the marching season and SAML’s competitive season, and have fun with the best community around.

WHO THIS IS FOR
For Student Leaders Looking to Get Ahead
SAML’s Fall Step-Off is designed for current Students (grades 5–12) who want to get ahead of the Marching Season and refine their conducting, flourishing, and marching skills. Participants will receive instruction and feedback from SAML’s Award-Winning Instructional Staff.
No prior SAML participation or leadership position is required to attend.
This is open to ALL Student Leaders!
WHAT TO EXPECT
From award-winning instruction, fun activities, and building community.
Here’s what the day will look like:
SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION
Spend the day in small group instruction with our award-winning staff, working hands-on in Flourishing and Conducting.
COMMUNITY CONNECTION
Meet fellow student leaders from other schools that you’ll see during the marching season. Get to know SAML staff and judges! We are SAML.
GAMES & ACTIVITIES
Enjoy fun group games and activities designed to build camaraderie and connection between all students!
THE SEASON STARTS HERE
Your season doesn't start at your first competition. It starts at SAML’s Fall Step-Off. This day separates the students who improvise from the ones who prepare.

FAQs
What time should I arrive?
All participants should prepare to arrive at 8:45am
What music is allowed?
Students (grades 5-12): Students should bring the audio for the march and field show (if any) their bands are performing this season. Students may also bring music they intend to use to prepare for the SAML 2027 Competitive Season. Standard SAML Music Selection Guidelines must be followed. See our Flourishing Guidelines and Conducting Guidelines for more information regarding Music Selection.
Did I have to compete with SAML previously to join Step-Off?
No! SAML’s Step-Off is open to any Student Leader or Band/Colorguard Member looking to refine their skills.
